The Triangle's own answer to the Muffs, Paybacks, and Raincoats rattle the rafters with their high-throttle, three-gril rock'n'roll.  The new single, "Jackfight b/w Makeout" features a crunchier, blues-garage attack than their more punk-pop minded deubut EP New Crush. Singer/guitarist Leigh Fox in particular sounds more comfortable with this mid-tempo material, allowing her to work her sultry, low-register delivery. 8pm/$39 - CP

THE COLLEGIATE STANDARD
Cover nod, index photo, Jackfight Single review
Fall 2004

Our name made the cover, photo made the index page, and a nice review of our new release "Jackfight" was included on page 13. Although the article got the song's premise wrong (it is about a FICTIONAL, SATIRICAL battle between Jack BLACK and Jack White), we appreciate the coverage. Here's what they said:

"Sweet Worship of Chapel Hill's The Pinkslips"

Chapel Hill's college radio band, The Pinkslips, have recorded "Jackfight", a new wong they wrote about Jack White of The White Stripes. It's not clear whether the song was inspired by Jack White's pummeling of The Von Bondies lead singerJason Stollsteimer last December (incidentally, no, it was inspired by Jack White and Jack Black's last names, but anyway....), (see photo inset) but the lyrics describe a backstage brawl between Jack White and "Jack Flash" (wrong again- Jack Black, not Jack Flash, but anyway....) with White prevailing (yes that's right!), of course. What other outcome would you expect from the Slips as they are big Stripes fans. "Jackfight" is raw and gritty with buzzing bass lines driving it but the vocals and storyline remind you of that sweet worship preteen girls express over cute boys (no comment). "Jackfight" is scheduled to be released to college radio stations in November. You can preview it on the Slips' website: www.thepinkslips.com. In the everything's related department, The Pinkslips have landed an endorsement deal with Eastwood Guitars, which works with The Von Bondies and has also reissued the Airline model that Jack White uses."

"Notes From Home" - Your Guide to the Local Music Scene
EP Review
By Rick Cornell
July 2004

"Wearing their DIY-ness like a favorite band pin, Pittsboro, NC, trio The Pinkslips are half Ramones, half josie and the Pussycats - with no disrespect intended toward any of the three parties involved in that comparison. The band's 8 song EP New Crush leans on the three-in-one theme of going out, getting into a relationship, and getting out of one, embodied by, in order, "9 to 5 Nights", the title track (and its breezy, optimistic pop rush), and the album-closing near-instrumental "Your Pinkslip". But "Never Dating a Rock Musician Again" is going to earn them the most early attention courtesy of its self-explanatory title, shout-along verses, and made-for-college radio spunkiness. Call the Pinkslips' sound three chords and a cloud of phermones."

The Independent (NC Weekly Magazine)
New Crush EP Review
By Grayson Currin
6.10.04

In only a year together, Raleigh's all-girl trio The Pink Slips has covered some impressive ground. They've written a band theme song, played a handful of high-profile bills in town, and recorded a promising first outing with Ken Mosher and Robert Sledge. The debut EP--an eight-song, 17-minute foot tapper--moves from the effortlessly bright-eyed pop of "New Crush" to the riot grrrl boy-dissing of "Complainer." The newly minted trio--shaped by drummer Elizabeth Hammond, bassist and songwriter Leigh Fox and guitarist Beth Turner in response to a "Musician Wanted" notice in the Independent Weekly--holds its own with the most straightforward material it has to offer: "New Crush" is a pop gem that would make Anna Waronker (and her father) giddy, and the opening "Hey Hey" thrusts along with a downtown swagger afforded by serious classic rock schooling. The flair of the songs sometimes disappears behind sheets of D.I.Y. attitude that obfuscates Fox's most charming ditties ("Nine to Five Nights") and her most witty thoughts ("Someone slap me in the face with a helping hand").

The disc's has a strong ending; a three-piece breakup suite anchored by the danceable and demanding "Angry Song." Somehow, the words "I want to yell at you!" have never managed to sound so damn seductive.

You can see this band live Saturday night at Kings as they help The Bleeding Hearts celebrate their new release.

New Crush EP Review
Spring 2004
By: James King.

The Pinkslips
New Crush

The Pinkslips self-released EP New Crush is the type of CD that gets betterwith every play. This all-female 3 piece delivers a pop sweet charm combined with a hard-edged approach and clever lyrics. This blend prevents their sound from becoming over syrupy. Leigh Fox sings about relationships, all-night parties, and rock musician boyfriends with such conviction,
you get the feeling that most of this stuff is really true. All of the
songs are catchy with a slight nod to the '90's indie rock movement. The playing on the disc is surprisingly confident given the fact that they have only been together for a little over a year. There is a lot of potential here. I look forward to hearing what they come up with next. - James King
